I think some companies use it as an advertising tool. For example:
http://www.connecticutcustomhomebuilder.com/
He uses it so as an online brochure.
Others use websites as product support tools. Microsoft does that, as do Compaq, etc. Instead of having hundreds of people answering product support questions on 1-800 numbers, it's cost effective to have a support center online.

Well for myself... My websites are for ministry purposes. Have nothing to do with making money or for giving people easier access to any product or service.
Websites are great for ministry because with almost a billion people around the world today with internet access what better medium does a ministry have to reach people? Ministries can't be on tv 24 hours a day and 7 days a week in a billion homes around the world. It's simply impossible... So the internet and a website makes that much more possible.

Living2Serve Ministries...
The link is in my signature. The ministries sole purpose is servanthood. Serving as Jesus did... I don't want to get into it here because that's not the focus of these forums... you can PM me if you'd like to discuss it further.
The site has gone neglected the last month or so due to being so busy with a lot of things... Christmas, Other projects, etc. but i'll get back to it soon.

cool, you have a free service for your a community.
I can see that the WWW brings people together.
What else can the WWW do for communities that are spread throughout the world?
What can the WWW do for communities that are geographically very close?
