Navigation Options

I'm looking to do something with my navigation on a site i'm building that I haven't done before... the normal vertical nav on the left side of the page is quite boring... I've thought about buying a license to use say a menu from Milonic or whatever but I'm not too keen on using DHTML/JS based menus since google can't read JS links. Murder to SEO.

SEO keeps options slim. Is there anyone that has done something that isn't seem much in the terms of navigation that they can share... anything to spark my imagination.

Scott

Well I've done that too... the site in my signature actually uses a list as naviagation and the float: left; property in CSS to cause it to display horizontally rather than vertically... nice menu and all that but i'm lookin for something different... i have no idea what I want... that's why I asked if you guys have done anything out of the ordinary.

I'd go with the dhtml/js menu and put text links at the bottom where they won't degrade the design too much.. or just one link at the bottom to a sitemap. It actually helps your google PR by not having so many outbound links on your index page.

Having a DHTML/JS menu helping ya PR? That's the first I've heard of that. Seems to me that only having links at the bottom of your page or only one link will hurt your google rankings since google brings up links with it's search results and only having one link would make that virtually impossible or limit your SEO for multiple keywords. (my own logic.. no research behind that)

Google transfers PR from pages to other pages.. it's called chanelling PR within your site through internal linking structure. Read this articlehttp://www.internet-marketing-research.net/internal-link-architecture.php
It deals with how many inbound links versus outbound links on pages and how that will affect your PR. You still have a link to every page on your site but it's not on the page where you want the highest PR - it's on a Site map or similar page. (researched by John Scott and PhilC - proven on many sites)
