I have purchased CDs on behalf of my employer, and I can tell you that when dealing with professional quality vendors, a content-to-cost ratio of 100 images : $500 is not uncommon at all. Case in point, Getty.
Comstock has multi-disc bundles and other special offers that are a little less shocking.
Thanks to whoever posted that link to sxc.hu, it looks promising. IStockPhoto is another great free resource that I use personally.

wonder why there soo expensive tho? yea fair enuff pro quality et al, but even some software houses cant afford that, the director of a soft co bought one i know he said it cost $700 canadian, and it had hundreds of pics on.
thanks for that link trainer i might purchase one.. otherwise what do you think of photos.com and $99 for one month max 50 dl's per day? Theres some small print on there site tho about the actual useage on templates..

I would be very skeptical of any post-purchase restrictions they place on the content. Read carefully.
That being said, you just need to weigh the quality of the content versus the amount you anticipate actually using it. Depending on the quality of the images and the selection available, if you d/l 50 quality stock photos for $99 I definitely would consider that "worth it."

seldom will you get unrestricted rights to a photo unless you are willing to pay a lot of money and that is unusual at that.

But still everybody use it. Don't they?
I wonder what happens when the owner of the image finds it?
