CMS - Drupal vs Joomla

Hi All,

To SysAdmin: Not sure if this is the correct forum so please feel free to move to a different forum is more appropriate.

Yep I know probably a much asked question but for my particular needs do either of these stand out as best suited to this task. This is my first foray into CMS so don't know either of them at the moment. However I'm fine with HTML/CSS/Javascript and even a bit of PHP if necessary.

I need to create a site for a small club, around 100 user max. The only requirements are to incorporate a simple to use message board / forum and an image & video library, preferably something with a Lightbox type image display.

Any suggestions which one I should go for?

Thanks,
Nick

If you are beginner in CMS then i think WordPress is the best for you then Joomla and Drupal..As wordpress is easy to customize and optimnize, it is user friendly and good from SEO point of view.
But if you only want to go with one of them than Drupal Better for Extensibility and Large Sites
Joomla Easier for the Non-Geeks..Now it depend on you..

Thanks for you thought deepgwb. Don't know if this is correct but from what I have read WordPress is best suited to blog type sites so I had guessed that I would be looking at either Drupal or Joomla but I could be wrong about that.

My other consideration is how they compare in the time it takes to create a similar website. Does it take longer to create a site in Drupal because it is more extensible than Joomla?

Wordpress is CMS as well. It has quite a few forum plugins and image library plugins as well. There is quite a bit of support as it is one of the fastest growing CMS with around 33% of new sites being built up from WordPress. It should suit your needs for a small club site.

wordpress is easy to use but is very limited. Drupal is by far and away more configurable than Joomla, but had a reputation for being harder to configure than Joomla.

All that changed with Drupal 7, and Drupal now has virtually one click install, one click upgrades, one click template and module additions. It really is the only CMS worth having, and will do everything you want it to now, and all you could think of it doing tomorrow.

I ought to declare an interest. My company publishes a "Drupal 7 Manual" and a "Drupal 7 Modules Manual", and a "Drupal 7 Ubercart 3 Manual". We publish them because after a lot of research we don't think any of the others can compete.

You can't really go wrong with all 3. Drupal, Joomla, and Wordpress all have great community development and support. So many people make themes and add-ons for these scripts and in many cases, they overlap.

Joomla is the best CMS as it is more intuitive than drupal, it is easy to learn, best on features, media capability, repurposing, templating, visuals, admin usability, ecommerce.
SEO is very good, and in practice better than Drupal.

Drupal 6 v Joomla 2.5 and I'd agree with you, but things have moved on.

Drupal 7 provides out of the box eCommerce sites, social networking sites, in fact any site you like. I can only assume Greenbreez, that you haven't used the new D7.

I've used both Drupal 7 and Joomla 2.5 and Drupal 7 is now far superior in almost every way.

Joomla is really pain in the a**.

Every once a little time they rewrite complete code so half of the old plugins and themes needs bunch of tweaks in order to work .

Different people have different opinions regarding the use of CMS for their website. However mostly of them consider wordpress to be the best for its easy configuration and user friendliness. Nowadays Drupal has also included various features to be used in the website, so that a person may feel good experience while using it.

I am also new to cms but I have a friend on wordpress doing really great! he has a video game blog and has really optimized it well, if I was you, I would start out with wordpress and then give it a go on joomla because they are much better for the newbies. My friend has actually made money off of wordpress in the first moth because it was so easy to set up.

People give several suggestions regarding the use of CMS. You can choose any one of the two because both have advanced techniques and features. Both are simple to use and faster to create an appealing website. I prefer using Drupal because Drupal provides you with simple techniques for your website to interact with external resources and file services.

Joomla is easier to learn, but if you want to deal with better quality sites then Drupal or Expression Engine are far better to learn than Joomla. I would never use Joomla for an enterprise level / business critical website.

as my point of view Wordpress and Drupal both are good, if you are planning for CMS development for 100 users data.

now a days more and more people are diverting on Drupal CMS, Wordpress is also great CMS with rich plugins.

you can choose wordpress or drupal, both are good for small CMS.

We have made many sites using both Drupal and Joomla. We were leaning more toward Joomla at the beginning and then in turned into Drupal. Drupal simply seems lighter and this is why we recommend it more.
