What to Look for in a Web Designer

When you are outsourcing for web design services, what do you usually look for in a web designer?

Thanks!

I think for me the best way to know if he is a good designer is his keen to details and a team player if he will be on the design team.

If I would be looking out for a web designer, then firstly I will look out for his previous works done and also the techniques which he implements in designing a website. Other than that, how good does he makes use of software and programming languages and tools to convince his client.

The most important thing to figure out first is her work experience. Can ask her some tricky technical question, can check the website made by her and also to ask about her previous work experience. Apart from this communication skill is also very important.

I would look for his portfolio and earlier work and his experiences. I will also look how good he may act as a team player.

Proof that they have in fact designed the websites in their portfolio. Don't know if standard practice but had a custom template designed and the designer put his contact details in the header which could be viewed with view-source.

Wasted a lot of time on a certain site for freelance designers and all that was presented by enlarge by the freelance designers was knocked up world press modular templates of poor quality.

Care to detail attracts my eye

Working with a web designer is really the same as working with anyone else.

Do they have experience (portfolio)? Do they have satisfied customers (testimonials or word of mouth - even better)? Do you like them? There's no reason to work with someone you don't like. Do they listen to what you want for your website and offer helpful ideas? Do they understand and support what you want to accomplish as a company? All of these are critically important when working with a web designer.

After looking at the portfolio, you can reach out and contact that website owner to ask for feedback about the designer. If they never heard of the guy then it's ok to spread negative comments about that website designer online.

Can not possibly stress this enough.

I hired a designer April 2011 for a pet project of mine. I wanted everything to be up and running within 6 months and was thinking to myself that if I could get the design done in 4 months, I'd have two months to set up everything. When it was all said and done (just the design I mean), it was late January 2012. This was only for one master page and 3 sub-page design with XHTML/CSS conversion.

Pretty sure the designer went on at least one full-week vacation where I got no replies to any of my emails.

If you are going to hire a web designer then firstly you should check his previous work and the client testimonials for his work. After that you should check his ability to code and his proficiency in any language.

I'd look for someone who has experience. A person with experience should have a full portfolio - this proves they have the skill set and a good imagination/vision for the job.

Experience is the one of the main factor in selecting the web designer. A well experience designer will have the solid portfolio about his/her previous projects. Try to take this projects links that has been created by them. And see do you like these projects? Do they make the site attractive?
