Post Company Website Question

Hey guys,

Basically I'm starting from scratch to create my company's site. I already made a protocol HTML5 web template and it's good and all but that's just design.

What I'm more focused on now is the backend, the core if you will. I've been considering 3 options mainly and I was hoping for some opinions on which one you think would be best.
  1. Joomla
  2. Drupal
  3. Integrate community software into already made HTML template (eg. phpBB)

The company offers multiple services (including web hosting but that's located on a separate domain using a billing software so that service is setup already), will be selling multiple products including both physical and software digital downloads. It'll also feature a community forums and an index of video tutorials.

Now from that description of a community, e-commerce and video index what do you think would be my best bet out of those 3 options? Keep in mind when I say integrate phpBB for example into my template, I'm simply using phpBB for the account system (registration, login, logout, hold customer info), all other scripts would be coded by myself using the phpBB account system to hold info obviously except for the forums itself which would be phpBB.

Thanks

EDIT: Just wanted to add in that I have experience with Joomla but not with Drupal so that would most likely have a big play on time. As well for those who haven't integrated phpBB before, it's very easy to do so and is easy to customize to your needs

Well, if you have experience with Joomla, develop it with Joomla. Simple as that
Unless you don't have a deadline and want to learn Drupal... then take your time to learn it and will be your first drupal project.
Not sure if phpBB is a good choice for what you are trying to achieve but I'm not an expert.
The way I see it - you already know what to do. "Just do it"

Thanks for your opinion, you do make a very valid point in just going with what I'm experienced in my only concern is they say Joomla isn't good for high volume websites (sites that receive a large number of views). Now this won't be an issue for a while but if I start getting larger I'd have to change my core.

On the other hand if I'm getting that big I could easily hire a few developers to make a custom CMS just for InSignal Guess I'll just go with Joomla. Thanks for the help.

BTW nice site you got there, very professional!

Hi,

I would suggest you that I myself has used Joomla and it has several advantages over Drupal. If you have a low budget, go for Joomla. Joomla has more modules than all the other Content Management Systems combined. However Drupal has some inherent advantages. Finally, from a technical stand point, none is better. If you want security, scalability and advanced functionalities, go for a custom CMS.

Regards,
James

IMO joomla should be fine for a popular or high traffic site.. Linux.com's site uses joomla and i'm sure they get a ton of traffic.

That is a very true and valid point, just everywhere I read on Joomla is they only recommend it for small/medium sites not for high volume sites.

On the other hand, linux.com could have customized Joomla to their liking, it being open source and all. Hard to say.

I'll either be using Joomla or attempting to create my own scripts using PHP. My only concern with making my own scripts is all these CMS's have been being developed for years so while yes making my own scripts would have exactly and only what I need, I'm bound to have a lot more security bugs than scripts that have been patching their security problems for years.

I'm not amazing in PHP, but I can get around esp if I have a framework helping me. Maybe I'll start off creating a basic account system (register, login, and logout) and slowly add and modify it to my needs. Maybe the outcome can end up being a perfect script for my site. My site is running on SSL and it's not hard to encrypt passwords and such but I do worry about countering SQL injections and other brute force methods.

Having looked at both Joomla and Drupal, I personally much prefer Joomla. It is a bloated script, however. So if you are doing a lot of traffic you are going to need a big hosting package, if not a VPS.

Personally, I don't know why you just don't write everything from scratch using PHP.
