Help setting up a more complicated website?

I've had an idea for a website that will allow users to meet up offline for events etc.

The way I envision it is that it will function somewhat like a dating website, with a database of users with the ability to message each other to set up real life events, but with more than 2 users able to contact each other at once for larger events.

Problem is, at the moment I only have a basic knowledge of HTML. I don't want to outsource any of this, I want it to be my own work, so I have some learning to do.

Could someone please give me a rundown of what I would need to learn and the best (and cheapest) places to get the required information?

Thanks for your help guys.

Why not just use one of the free forum scripts that includes a calendar.

I know a little bit of PHP and to write all that from scratch would be a daunting task.

There is already a service called Meetup that does something similar. Maybe find something that says it runs similar to Meetup and tweak it?

Anakha,

Its hard to say what code you will need to use to build it. In the world of programming, there are usually several ways to end up at the same result and even several “best” ways to end up at the same result. I would say that you should at least have a firm understanding of JavaScript and PHP along with HTML and CSS to build something like this.

The other members have good points. In the age of content management systems, themes and templates, you really don’t have to do a lot of work anymore. Yes you will not be doing a lot of your own coding if you go this route but think about your opportunity costs. You could spend a year developing a website without the aid of pre-packed programming only to have it flop or you could make the same product in half the time or less and then if it isn’t successful, at least you didn’t waste a year on it (or more).

Here are some tips on learning php and JavaScript,

Hope that helps you,

Shawn
