I just redesigned an existing web site and am about to launch. What is the best way (code) to redirect all the pages that will now get a 404 error.....

Use .htaccess and specify your own 404 page. Or just have all 404s go to your home page.

http://www.plinko.net/404/
Also, take a look around and some of the hilarious 404 pages made by people.

You mean you have say:

www.olddomain.net

moved to

www.newdomain.net

and so all the www.olddomain.net/URLHERE get 404s..

just do a Permanent Redirect for the Old domain.

in Apache its called: Redirect Permanent

Look at the plinko site for a walkthrough.

Also take some time to cycle through the funny 404s like:

definately use .htaccess

redirect 301 /oldpagename.ext http://www.domain.com/newplace

that way any of your links will still work and if you have pr on the pages, you get to keep it!
