No but don't you have to worry about copyright issues now more than ever? i thought I heard in the news about a company that had to pay like 40 million dollars. How do you make money outpouring bandwidth like that.

money with ads and the fact that you are not hosting anything, you are just linking up files with the end user.
it's touchy, sure...
I'd say we'd have to wait for some strikes against torrent only sites to see how things play out.
(there may have been, I'm not up on the subject really)

You missed the Pirate Bay brouhaha. In the end, Pirate Bay came back online (Sweden doesn't really give much of a crap about copyright law), but it was offline for a few days last month, causing quite a stir.
But maybe we ought not be discussing how to create a site for what is in many jurisdictions is a questionable activity, lest we get bonked on the head (ie, put on someone's list)? (Have you seen This Movie Is Not Yet Rated? Those MPAA people are serious whackjobs.)

I am not interested in creating a torrent site but I am really interested in what kind of technologies these sites (thepiratebay.org, mininova.org) use for their backend. Are they just using PHP to pull information from a DB?

Well sorry for bumping a really old thread but this came up in google so i descided to see if i could answer any questions. I understand how to make a web server, and iv'e made some with user register, login, logout, edit profile, file upload, and file search. I guess i could make one for a tortrent but it would be primitive, because of all the torrent stats those sites have, i think the servers for those sites look at the torrent file and find the trackers, then contacts the trackers for info on the torrent like how many peers and stuff. But one, I don't know how to read the torrent file, it looks like latin to me, oh wait i know latin, it looks like german, shit i know that too, it looks worst than spanish, lol no offence. I tried to ask the trackers stuff but i didn't understand that neither. So i wouln't provide you with any stats but i could get you something at least. But aside from that, my first year of junior high is starting in two weeks or so, and i don't think i can get it done in time but i could get it done anyway in some time. So if you think i could help email me at dreammaster632(at)hotmail(d0t)com.

A little digression:
I just wanted to say that webmasters (most of them, not all) are the most arrogant and egocentric people I know. I believe I am webmaster too, and many times I asked for help for the problems I had, but rarely I got straight answer, most of them were like this one.
For example, this guy found some question that wasn't answered and decided to say something about himself. First he said that he understands how to make a web server and he was also so kind to tell us what kind of web server (with login, logout, register, file search...) so everybody could know how hard that is to build. Then he guess he could make such a web site although he don't really knows how to do it.
When "startsphere" asked the question, i suppose he secretly wanted to know how smart people are, and what languages they know, so he tells that too, and offers his help, abut something he doesn't know how it works, but first he said he don't have time for helping you because he have better things to do, some smart stuff we ordinary people don't understand - like school.
I don't know who is this guy, but I know he is not alone. Many of webmasters are like this - they say how wonderful they are, but don't offer the answer to the question.
