Capitalizing on Your 404 Error Page

Here is a bit different approach to the traditional advice given for a 404 page:
Quote:
...By leaving the 404 error page on your website or blog at this generic default, you are telling the visitor that the path of least resistance is to leave your site entirely. You donít want that. Instead, you should capitalize on this potentially lost visitor and point them in the direction you want them to go...
Capitalizing on Your 404 Error Page

Have you ever thought of doing this? If you have, how successful has it been?

This blog post just reminded me about mine. I changed themes about 2 months ago and old theme I had 404 page customized a lot but I have did nothing with this new theme and it's an ugly default 404 page.

Just wrote down on a sticky note to do this on the weekend as I need a lot of time to test things out and make it a resourceful 404 page like some of the examples shown. Even if someone lands on a dead link, you can still get them to another excellent section of the blog or to a landing page if you selling something.

Right now, I am prolly loosing traffic because the default page is not aligned right and just stinks. I wish theme developers would create custom 404 pages in there designs but they don't and most bloggers don't even edit there's.

I made redirection on most of my 404 pages no need of 404 pages in my opinion.

How ironic is this view count

Anyway,

You have to consider the flip side as well. If you make a "pretty" 404 page so users aren't looking to run away, you need to make sure this doesn't become consistent and ensure that they can have a call to action button to visit to report the problem if they consider being a good citizen of the interweb.

You may lose a visitor this way, or prevent several hundreds/thousands in the future? Who knows?

As long as you fine tune it where it's ugly enough to report the 404 on your website but good to look at where it's not so corporate looking.
