Some people concider intro's annoying
they often waste your time, - flash ones in particular.
they were not inented to make you have to wait for an extra page to load!

I always, ALWAYS skip Flash Intros. If I can't skip, I usually close the window and give up.

hey guys, go easy on flash, if you dont know how to use it, flash intros can be lame and a waste of time for someone trying to veiw your site, but if done properly it can give your site the intoduction it needs, to let the veiwer know what your site is about before they go in. Most flash intros have a skip intro button, or should anyways, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem. If you ask me splash screens are the most pointless thing a site can have, to have a page with an image that says enter just doesn't make a lot of sense, but to have a flash intro is atleast intertaining, know what i mean.

I think the origional purpose of a splash page was to provide a fast loading front to the site that gives the user enough to decide if they want to enter. - Saving the user some time, and solving the "you have 10 seconds to make the visitor want to stay" rules.
Flash into's totally miss the point of splash pages.
Conversly, once you've got the person just a litle bit interested in the site, give them the option on the first page inside the site to watch the intro, make it the only other thing on the page other than the header and navigation if you like, - but make sure they have to initiate it, automatic ones take the control away from the user and add an element of unpredictability, making the user wary of your site removing trust.

I keep holding off on installing the Flash plug-in on my Firebird browser. I'll keep holding off as long as I can. No offense to Flash lovers, but IMO they are more liked by the designers than the users.

If the flash page is designed right, without using too many annoying effects and it looks professional, I'll use it.

Fan sites and band sites are often the best place for flash, I'll admit it has it's uses and can contribute greatly to the user experience.
http://www.relientk.com/ I see constantly flashing red/white bit middle left, and a fixed-small blury font for the content.
Not bad apart from that, and it could probably be done without flash (but with a fair amoundt of adapting), just put a couple of flash bits in, like the animated parts. Good thing is when you click another of the pages, the current page stays visible while the other loads, load-in-background sort of thing.
http://www.tobymac.com/ Splash page made entirely of images, wtf?
Stared at black screen for a long while when went into the site. Good progress indication, much better to have actual progress rather than those bars that get to 100% then just go back to 0% in a fixed-time cycle, .
Most of the content I could find was tiny images and links to other sites, although there was a good amount in 'latest news'. The music started without my consent, so I shoved a sock in its hole. A lot of work went into the visual design, but I think that was the only place. I think the person that made it fancies himslef.
I'm a harsh critic.

The tobymac website has a hired content writer, but she does a terrible job. I use to host the chatroom, but took it down since I couldn't watch a room full of 300 screaming fans 24/7.

If you know how to use flash well, then you can have a small intro while your site is loading, so if you have a huge site, then why not have a small intro to fill the time while they would normally we waiting for a page to load and could possibly leave the site.
