Question JOOMLA! Anybody help??

Just set Joomla up and i'm having problems with writable files and installing components. I've managed to install a template, but I cant install a component or mambot or edit css/html. I go through the installer>components, but i get the error message:

Quote:
Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory.
I changed the write attributes to 777 from 666, still get error.

One thing that may be the problem is that

Quote:
PHP register_globals setting is `ON` instead of `OFF`
I had no php.ini file in my root so i made one with this line of code:

Quote:
register_globals OFF
I heard that you have to distribute this to every directory in joomla, done this but done nothing. Im with UKFREEHOSTS(not free hosting), it has php 4 support, but as there was no php.ini in the root to begin with i may not have access to the php.ini or they may have the settings unalterable. I have just asked them, but they really suck for support.

I also get the problem when trying to edit the CSS/HTML. I go into the editor and at the top it says 'writable', when trying to save it i get an error message:

Quote:
Operation failed: Failed to open file for writing.
So obviously there is some setting somewhere that is messing around with the writability of everything. Maybe my host, who knows thats why im here. Before you ask, i've already searched the Joomla forums and everything is just vague on this subject. I am not an expert in php, so would appreciate any help from anyone who used/uses joomla and maybe has had same problems in the past.

Anyone know any hosts that are good for Joomla sites, i.e. decent support and support for 3rd party extensions??

Hope somebody can help

Hi, I run 13 joomla sites and I know a little bit as far as installation. I usually chmod all the files it requests in the first install step 1 screen using smartftp. It's really easy and fast. If you want you can get with me on yim: happy_dog2005 and I will give you a hand.
