If I'm not wrong and if the way your cpanel and my cpanel works is similar, the file is for you to upload to your new server and not for you to unzip and get the files in it.

that is correct. it is a file that the cpanel recognizes and will unzip back as a directory. it works very similar to backing up a database. my only suggestion would be to get a good ftp software, I for one have used smartftp for a while. From there you can select your root web folder(should be the www folder), right click on it and select download>direct. it will copy everything over to your hard drive if that is what you are wanting.

Oh yeah, SmartFTP for the win! It's so user-friendly and it's free to use.

the backup option in the control panel creates a full backup of the home directory. which you can download to your computer when its prepared.
it usually takes 3 to 10 min depending on the sever.

now its in the tar.gz format

this format can be opened by some of the de-compression softwares

and if i am not wrong winrar can do the job for you.

I don't understand exactly what the problem is

with any FTP client if you know
FTP address
username
password

you should be able to connect to the server and see a directory listing of
your server's "home" directory

IF you get nothing then try changing the ftp transfer mode from passive to active (or vice versa) since it has been a problem with me for some servers

If that does not work then you either did not type the ftp, username, password correctly or the person did not give you the right ones.

hmm... It seems like you are taking a long route for a simple problem. Let me explain how can it be done pretty easily. I assume that you can log into cPanel and create "Full Home Directory Backups".

Now, what you have to do is explained here:

1). Click on the "Backups" icon in your cPanel.
2). While on the "Backups" page, click on "Generate/Download a Full Backup". It'll take you to Full Backup page.
3). While you're on the "Full Backup" page, make sure that 'Home Directory" is selected as the Backup Destination. Now click the "Generate Backup" button.
4). Wait one or two minute and refresh the "Full Backup" page. Now you should see the backup file link under "Previous full backups saved in home directory:"

5). The file looks something like this: backup-4.5.2007_19-31-47_demo.tar.gz . Just click on the file link to download your backup.

That's the simplest method to generate and download your backups, if you are a cPanel user.
