new generation website url structure

Hi everybody,
I am used to build my sites with a main index.php file that requires and display wanted pages. So the url sturcture of sites are build like this:

www.mysite.com/index.php?page=display_friends&username=someone

But in many sites i see a different structure and I want to build my sites in that way so the url will be like this:

www.mysite.com/someone/friends

or even better:

www.someone.mysite.com/friends

I searched the web but couldn't find a good source about this issue.
Is there anyone knows good sources about this issue or anybody mind explaining the logic?

Thank you

search for short urls. that is the official name of what it is called. if you are using a CMS some of them have built in scripts to handle short urls like Xaraya for example. There should be some php scripts or at the very least tutorials to show you how to set it up. it is really not all that complicated if I remember correctly.

The other term to do a little seaching with is "SE friendly URL". Most of the references under "short url" will relate to services that redirect your long, ugly urls to nicer, shorter ones. That's one way to solve the problem but as greg mentioned, if you are using a CMS then there is almost always a feature built in to the CMS to do this or a module or mod that you can download and install to do this. Are you using a CMS and if so which one?

I got the solution. It is mod_rewrite. Which is done not with php but apache.
it is here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/mod_rewrite.html
