Maybe try a free host for a while till you get the hang of things?

Yes, You first try free webhosting and subdomain for experiments.

If you are not using programming language (like ASP, PHP)
then Google page is better.

There are also free hosting/subdomain available for PHP.

Try out things on a freehost first. Though if you have a domain name in mind you might want to purchase it since some freehost allows u to use your own domain name.

Once you get the feel, upgrade to a paid hosting plan and just change the nameserver over to the new host

The way your question was worded it sounded like you're trying to pick EITHER hosting OR a domain, well you need both, not one or the other.
Not saying you need to go out and buy a domain, but like stated above, use a free web host, test a few of them out, they usually give out free subdomains.

Do a google search for free web hosts and you should come up with plenty of directories of them.

As everyone said use a free host first untill you know your way around everything, and while you do that just use the subdomain that the host gives you.
After that you can by both for the price of on actually. There are many, good, paid hosts around the web that can offer you a domain name with the purchase of a web hosting package. So before you buy one or the other you may want to search around for a host that offers both like that.
