Freelance Designer

This may seem a little silly, but what exactly is a Freelance Designer/Web Designer/Programmer etc..
I know that Freelancing generally means to lock into a very long term employment with the one person or boss (or something like that).

Does it man that the designer/programmer etc, works just for themselves instead of being employed?

- Thanks

Freelance does not mean being locked in for a long time - just the opposite. It means they work on a contractual basis. Contracts can be one week or three years. You are a hired specialist that is not part of the regular staff.

I heard it best described this way. You are freelance even if you are 100% self employed and working full time until you hire a full time employee. So when your business grows to more than just you, then you are technically not freelance. I really like the description/definition as it adds a bit more regarding the business side of things too.

Just a few pennies from my pocket.

I prefer the word "sub-contractor". A lot of the companies I sub-contract to have their own Webmonkies. The problem is 99% of the webmonkies companies hire just can't do the job (job=goals and objectives - not the site look).

I usually lay it on the line "authority must be commensurate with accountability".

In other words, if I don't meet your goals (and I have the authority to do what I need to), fire me. If your goals are not met because your inhouse marketing expert is a moron - fire him. If I met your goals, I'm going to want a raise next contract.....lol.

Most of my work comes from companies that have a beautiful looking site that just doesn't do anything. So the first question I ask the CEO is, if I put up a one blank page and it triples your leads, do you care?
