I'm confused, what is the question? Wikipedia is based on the open source mediawiki project. The problem is NEVER if the site is run on open source code or not, it is all about the branding.

If you launched an myspace clone today, closed source or open source, the difficultly is in getting traffic and establishing the brand not what license your script has.

the question is how difficult is to make open source platform so other developers can make new applications for it and users can add those applications into their profile.
