Red face Members Area

I'm an amateur web designer and have designed a web site for a golf teaching professional. What he wants is a members area where people can register free for tips and internet golf lessons. He wants it set up so when they register with their preferred login name and password an email is automatically sent to them confirming their membership and their details are automatically stored in a database.

Now I believe for all this to happen it has something to do with php and mysql .... of which I know nothing about.

Do I need to learn much about php or mysql?

I do have access to cpanel with my webhost, so there's php configuration, mysql databases, phpmyadmin, php pear packages, mysql database wizard. But a lot of this is very confusing to a bloke approaching 60.

Can anyone help this old goat and get him started on the right track.

Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks.

Why not just install a forum script? No use re-inventing the wheel. A forum script would give his members a "members only" area and a great way to communicate, with ability to upload files, pics, etc.
