Is there such thing as "the best size to build a web-site" ?
The size of your website will always fluctuate accordingly to its content. It really depends on the nature of the website because you cannot compare an e-comerce site with a personal site that has 3 to 6 plain text pages.

Designing web sites to fit all resolutions is a very important web design principle
try 800 as your width. this will display good on 800X600 resolution

I think a lot of people have moved on from that. I have, anyway.
I use a fixed width of 900px now.
Another possibility is using fluid width with fixed width side columns to cover all your bases, but this is not my taste.

I agree, though you do run the risk of turning away a minority of users which is getting smaller every year. See here for some browser stats though be aware that the stats probably come from more tech aware users (which could have a bearing on screen size).
If you do want to ensure the site works okay for 800x600 users then you shouldn't exceed a maximum width of 770-780px but if this isn't a concern you can design for a maximum width of around 950px

I design for 1024x768 these days, as most people have thrown away their cancer causing, death-ray, ghetto monitors. All of my sites have over 98% of visitors using 1024x768 or greater. Plus the people that don't have it are probably used to scrolling.

Yeah, but i think it's indispensable to use all that space. I prefer to leave some space on left and right for 1024 users.

There should be a main container on your page right under the body tag.
Maybe a div or a table? Set the width of the main container to 100% and it will fit on all screens.
Note: That main contaienr should wrap all your page content;
<body>
<div class="MainContainer">
...
all your page content
...
</div>
</body>

sinster, I recommend you to take into account the site's potential users. For example, if you design the site for gamers aged 12-20 or so there is a very big chance that they have a screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater. However, if you design an intranet site for a company where sys admin set a resolution by 800x600 and does not allow changing it, then you probably need to stick to this size. Another good habit is to make an elastic design, which will fit multiple common resolutions. You can do this by using relative percentage in your HTML and CSS code instead of exact pixels.

same here. I also made my designs in 1024x768. the bigger the better but offcourse you should always see to it that it is proportion.

When I design, the Width normally stay's between 750-800 pix unless its a special request or fluid. The height varies on each design depending on the amount of content - An ideal height would be 550-600 pix (Insuring less or no scrolling no matter what the viewers resolution is). Let's face it, there are lot's of people out there that just don't like to scroll.

Wow! Great thread.. this is something that frustrates me everytime I start a new project. Should I design with 800x600 people in mind.. or say forget it and give myself more room to work and be creative. I guess when I noticed YouTube was in the top 5 websites on Alexa and designed their site at a fixed width of 880, that I shouldn't worry so much about those 800x600 users so much anymore.. it must not mean your site won't be successful if they have to scroll right.. or maybe they'll get with the times and start using 1024x768 or higher!
Things have really changed since the release of all these flat-panel monitors. Most of them are built to be viewed at 1024x768 or higher.. and almost everyone prefers or uses them now (except me). I prefer them, I just don't need them at the moment.
So, I've also been designing at 880 pixel width.. or 100%

I'm usually using a fixed width of 900px for the ps document, I consider this my "working area".

Which files are you talking? My entire site (all the files that make it functional) plus the layout files are usually never more than 100k.. or are you talking like just one piece.. like a logo.. 100k? That's an insane logo. If you use the right software and know what you're doing you should be able to make everything extremely minimal file size.

I use 750X600, it all depends on what purpose the website serves.
