Adding Video to Website..

What's the best way to add a 50 mb AVI or WMV to a site without it causing the page to load slow? I know the 'Embedded' way, but isn't there a better way, I don't do this that often. YouTube does a good job displaying Vidi, how do they do it?

Thanks,

First off don't force video on anyone, they should chose to view it. There are a couple of ways to stream (buffer), use a progressive stream or stream it form WMS. That way it will buffer and not load the whole file.

Next encode your video - 50 megs will put up a whole hell of a lot of video on thye web. I don't know what you're showing but sometimes quality isn't as important as getting the point accross - example - this is a 4 meg video - http://www.forextips.com/INTRODUCTION-FOREX-video.htm

WM encoder 7 still does a better job of encoding for the web (if you already put a newer version on its a process to go back, but well worth it.
Do a screen capture of your video using mwe 7 and lower the audio to mono, and cut your fps. Play with it and reduce the size.

I agree youtube and Google Video are excellent streaming solutions. You can make your own flash player.. the server load will be the same amount.. but it will broadcast differently. Using the old embed HTML code forces the user to download the video first, then play it from the hard drive. The flash player lets it 'stream' which lets you watch while you download. I'm sure you've noticed that. The streaming seems to be better for server load but in the end it's the same amount of data.

Don't be a cheapskate get a host that provides Windows media Server as part of the package. Free stuff is worht every penny.

You may want to see the demographics on the most used browser - what say it ain't so - Windows Media Player! How can that be?

Speed of loading from video depends on indexation of video of the staff in a file.

For FLV (YiuTube) concepts of indexes do not exist at all therefore there all so quickly - загрзил - has lost.

For AVI there are two types of indexes - old and new if are used old it is necessary to wait while to be loaded all 50mb, because indexes are added in the end of a file, for new indexes go on a file therefore loading can consistently go faster.

But in anyone cases speed of loading depends that than video is loaded

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Here's the deal - encode your video for the group you are targeting.

If a good portion of your targeted group is from corp or commerical networks, they may not be able to even view it if it is in the wrong format.

It can be a bit complicated - for example: a lot of corps block video, but you can stream it thru a port to enable them to see it.... (443 or port 80) and beat their IP guys.

There are many many ways to encode and deliver video. There are also many tutorials on the web. Read up on it.

I always convert to flv, add a controls bar and export as swf. Most self-sufficient way.

For large files use streaming.
Progressive will still cause a delay.

encode it correctly, a 50 meg avi can be a 6 meg wmv, if encoded correctly for the web, then you can do a progressive. Don't "always" use any particular encoding method, unless you are a noob. Use what's best for your application.

this was a 1 gig file encoded for the web (just a clip of us doing the tail of the dragon) - http://64.62.146.179/netzone/totdmus.wmv (looks ok at 200%)

good luck.
