I've heard of it, though it's not widely used compared to the other large forums.

I've been a member of - and admin'ed - both the CGI and PHP versions.
YaBB SE is a particularly good forum software for anyone completely new to it all on the internet - it's simple, very easy to use, and totally non-complicated. The support team are especially great.
I don't use YaBB SE anymore - but I have absolutely no complaints about it. I simply grew into something else.

phpBB is more powerful than YaBB, but YaBB is soo customizable that it's cool.

That is true.
Last I heard, the YaBB SE project was being wound down, and a new software is going to be used - going by the name of "Simple Machines".
YaBB CGI will continue, AFAIK, but as it can be quite server intensive, I know of webhosts who will not host it. No problem with the PHP/MySQL version, though.
