Invision : too expensive.
PhpBB : poor security, poor function. (wanted to update to PHPBB3 but i'm scare i screw up the DB).
SMF : so far so good with tiny portal

IM141 is phpbb with many mods already installed. Plus a support forum. A slight prob with security being too strict so ocassionally you have to edit a file to get security from 'medium' to 'low'. I've had to do it to 4 files.

I use IF, It's the regular invision script hosted on the IF server.

Downside, Not on my server, upside, free... unless you want to pay to have the ads removed. Even that is nominal. I paid to have the ads removed on mine, $5 kept it ad-free for several months.

I think Joomla is pretty good with lots of features. It is part of a GoDaddy hosting package I have. An easier install is the SMF...Simple Machines Forum. You can get it at

Yeah I agree, PHBB and SMF are the best
But if u want to integrate a forum in Joomla, I'd advise u to use fireboard. it's good.

I tried PHPBB2 before for 2 forums and I put them both offline since. The amount of spam I got was too much to deal with, I can't devote an hour a day to delete spam users and posts, which keep real users from posting. Is the newest PHPBB better now?

Yipee is liked by many
when I first started I was using phpBB2, and now I upgraded to phpBB3 and I must say phpBB3 is very good.

What I love about phpBB, is how you can just customize the hell out of it, vBulletin, IPB... you can also do the same, but with phpBB (at least to me) the sky is the limit... plus its free.

Just try it out on this host : free forums
