How can I monitor my web site with out paying some company to do it for me?

you code the following:
-- visitor and user agents tracking
-- data storage
-- displaying stored data
-- etc, etc...

You can start with Google Analytics, which will tell you quite a lot of the basic stuff, but if you want more serious detail then Costin is right, you need to set up tracking yourself. i.e. Against every movement you want to track set up a record of the ip and the click then you can match that ip with all the clicks it did on your website and then you now where it went and what it did.

Monitoring for bandwidth etc is much easier so you shouldn't have much problems.

I use Analytics. I find it to be more than adequate.

You could also have a look at this open source analytics software by piwik

Hello, code junkie. You know, I also needed free tracker - I found one that works perfectly at www.votingserver.com. It is absolutely free. - Just an alternative to google )) good luck!

I use Google analytics on all my sites, but I've recently been looking for a more detailed alternative. Google analytics pulls in all my adwords data, so it's easy to view campaigns within analytics, but I'm trying to find something that provides more detail on the visitor's path through my site. I just wish Google would somehow configure goals for external clicks, such as affiliate links. I know you can track outbound clicks already, but it would be easier to be able to configure a goal such as "click to site XYZ" as opposed to putting the onclick code on each external link.
