Fade in on graphics & links - javascript ?

I recently found some javascript that creates a transition effect on a page. Then recently saw a website with buttons that when you hovered over them (i think they were simple text links) changed colour as you might expect but did so gradually almost as a fade in transition.

Does anyone know how this can be achieved ???

can't you remmeber what site so we can see?

It can be done by changing the colour a little bit eavery like 1/100th of a second (with javascript) by the way.
