How many people recommend creating a user accessible sitemap on their websites?

What do you feel are the advantages?

I am new to this but from what I have read the main 2 advantages are to increase accessibility and also help the search engines spiders navigate your site.

Looking at it as a site visitor, a potential client, I like sitemaps. It helps me find what I am looking for quickly.
Aside from that, it does help spiders to crawl your content. It can provide you with more internal links for your site as well.

When I had one it got maybe 20 views a month. Which would be less than 1% of my views.

Pretty much dito everyone else on this so far, but I'll add this:

While a site map can facilitate robots finding pages, one's navigation structure should already do that . . . and what's more there are various other site map formats for search engines such as Google's XML site map format which they can "digest" just as well if not better.

On rather smallish sites, the navigation should perfectly well serve as the "site map" for both robots and end-users; however, and much larger sites, a browser-acessible site map is a good idea but depending on internal link stratagies, is probably more helpful to the end-user. For example, USPS and UPS change their sites around quite a bit, and I'm always having to dig into their site map to find things I used to know where they were.

At the end of the day, though, creating user accessible sitemap would never be a bad idea.

Don't misunderstand me. A user accessible sitemap was a waste of time. A sitemap.xml is something that will help you.
Sean says it pretty well.

Depends on your website. I think HTML sitemaps are great to get some link juice flowing to all your important pages/hubs... And can potentially help the user navigate your website as well. Add XML sitemaps for search engines only.

I am looking for a free sitemap generator. Anyone know of a good one?

I have over 5k pages so those free ones that are limited to a few hundred pages are no good.
