Talent.
Someone can work hard, but if they have no talent in the area of design it won't do them much good. Mix the two together and you've got mad skilz.

Experience. I've never met a designer worth talking to who doesn't have YEARS under their belt.

Absolutely. You can train anything, but can't train talent and creativity. Ideas are what makes the world go round. I know so many programmers and designers who don't have that "special something" and their work will always be so so regardless of their technical skills.

true, but the only way one can arrive there is if someone gives them the chance to gain experience.

I would say look at what they have done and their past clients. To me a good designer will lead the pack. Their designs are things you would never think of and are still good after 3 years.
The one thing I have notice about a good designer is their confidence in their work. They'll have past work on their site for you to see and judge. If I have to ask to see it, I blow them off.

i think in order to be a good web designer, you need to know a lot of html codes and use them as much as possible on the websites.

Well, imo, designers dont need to know code. Sure they should be *aware* of the importance of code and be capable of working within the limits of the code that will be used to build the page, but code and design really aren't the same thing. A coder builds, a designer designs.

They enjoy their work and constantly try to improve. Attention to detail is a must.

IMO, It really must be a combination of passion, talent and experience... Hard work comes a long when you have passion on what you do... Experience makes that passion ponder and expand...

a good designer will be able to create a website from strictly code without the use of dreamweaver. they will see in code. they will also be able to show off their work after 5 years and it will still be needed
