This would probs be best in the web design lobby?
Voted anyway, sometimes I even design for 640x480 like my up and coming web design site, but generally 800x600 is the resolution I and everybody else should really be designing for.

800x600 is pretty much the standard for the times. You want it to look good at higher resolutions, but you can pretty much not worry about the 640x480 crowd.

I design for 1024*768. This time last year 48.3% of people used that resolution ( http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=341264)
Alot of sites say that 800x600 accounts for over 60%, but this is outdated info based on outdated sources.
No doubt the 1024 % is even higher this year, as it is the standard new laptops are set at, and new monitors are made to display even higher than that.

Things change fast. Im saying 1024 even though i take into account the 800 crew
Its like bband now 10% in the UK has it. Still way behind the US where it is about 38% last time i checked.

Usually I'll design them at 1024x768, but make sure they don't look too gross in 8x6.. so I voted for 800x600. I think, in maybe a year or so, 800x600 should be going the way of the 640x480 dodos.

I make sure their is no horizontal scroll on 800X600, but other then that I really design for 1024X768 looks wise.

Thanks all for taking my little poll. Do you take in account that someone might have a taskbar on the side instead of on the bottom of their screen? Or they might have a sidebar in the browser?
Thanks again for your comments.

Yes, I make them fit about 760 wide so they fit on the screen. I am not really bothered about vertical scroll.

To answer all your questions. The bar at the bottom of the screen is 60 pixel tall. It can be made much smaller if desired. I use SuSE Linux 9.0 because it is reliable, allows me to do things I can't in Windows, comes with thousands of programs for a very small fraction of the cost. Actually you can install the Pro version for free from their servers. Don't do Windows. The bar on the bottom is the standard taskbar. The bar on the right is a KasBar - each one of he squares actually expands out and shows you a thumbnail of each instance of that program. Very cool!
On the bottom, is the start button, home button, terminal button is next, after that is the help system, then three browsers and a mail program. Next we have the clock/planner, The thing with 4 little squares is the virtual desktop area (can have 16). Then there is a color tool. Finally a section that has all my favorite programs. The right most arrow on the right collapses all that behind the KasBar which runs up the right side. If I have more than one instance of a program running, they are shown from right to left with the most recently opened instance on the right.. My clipboard can hold 25 seperate items - not shown. Menus can be transparent if desired - as shown in picture.
Have a nice day.
