FTP

I guess this is the right place to post it. im new to using ftp only used it a couple of times for my site. and that was just a picture or 2 at a time. ive gone to some sites where it pretty much just looks like you connect to there computer and just pull the files from there to your desktop. is that how it works? if it is how can I set it up to do that? and if its not is there a certain place that I can get like 7 gigs of space for free. all I need it is for like one day. I need to put it on there and my friend will take it off and burn it to a cd for me. if it helps any I use cuteftp

You first need a webhhost. Maybe you tried a free host before.
After you get a host and an FTP program, you can upload files to server; and they can be reached on internet (if things done right).
you can also get files from server (host). Sometimes you don't need FTP program to upload files. Browser can do the same thing.

If you have a stastic IP it is easy, just install an ftp server and add your friend with a username and password, and he can get the files from your box, with an ftp client,
free ftp client--> http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
free ftp-server--> http://www.cerberusftp.com/.
If have a dynamic IP you need a sevice --> http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/, also free.

Most FTP utilities have instructions.

I suggestion reading the "README" or step-by-step instructions that come standard with most FTP programs.

The settings/configuration can be gotten from your ISP (web-hosting provider). They typically have FAQs to answer these common questions.

I think you all missed the point, he is asking about setting up an anonymous ftp server.

that is something your host will have to provide for you, many won't do it.

well if it is for what he wrote, getting some files to a friend so ha can burn it, it will do with an ftp server on his box and a dynaminc DNS if he dosent have a fixed IP

well, on rereading his post, I missed the point.

He wants to upload a program of some kind that is 7gigs in size so a friend can download it and burn a CD from it.

That just needs a ftp account with that much space.

However, it sounds like something illegal so we shouldn't even be discussing it. :wink:

not necessarily illegal, the 7gigs could be anything, his hard drive contents maybe he needs all that stuff backing up and doesnt have any burners.

Set up an FTP server like ricool said, you can do anonymous anyway if you want, don't have to set up user/pass.
