Web Design Help, Please.

Hello all,

I want to design a website to sell software and don't really have a clue where to begin with this.

To give an example, I want a main (index) page describing the company and the products available. On a menu, I would like "Products", "Services", etc. categories.
When a user selects a product for more information, I want that page to be displayed with a "Buy Now" or "Download" link.

I need to know how and where I would store the software to be sold/downloaded.

I know some basic HTML for webpages, but now idea what I need to do to accomplish the "Downloading" part of the website. Do I need some ASP, PHP or other scripts?

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanx,
ziggy

P.S. I hope that this is the correct place to post my question.

You need a full ecommerce site. You can find some free script at http://www.Hotscripts.com that might help you figure out the full process of running a site like that.

Thanx for the reply ATLien, I did take a look at the website you mentioned, but I think I just got completely confused as to "what" I should be looking for.

The concept of the website that I wish to have is simple really, you see websites offering "Free Trial" software all over the place. My question is how do they do that?

I know how to make a basic website for informational purposes and upload the .html files or graphics to a server.

I'm not sure if I should start to make the website using HTML because I don't know if it should be down in a different language/scripts like ASP, CGI, or anything else.

Anyway, thanx for the info once again, any more advice is appreciated.

it really doesn't matter if you start the site. an html file can be easily changed to an asp or php extension.

also, those places that offer trial versions actually have a script embedded within the file to keep track of the date of installation so it runs out at a specified timeframe. then they have some sort of payment processor for those that want to purchase the full version and download it directly from the site.

my company can set that up for you if you like. we might be able to give you a discount ... if you're interested. you can contact me at info@3howards.com.

If you have broadband, another option would be to let Web Site Robot create and host the site on your own computer. No html or coding needed. People can buy online with their credit cards. You may download it from http://www.netforall.com

Thanks!

you just put the software in a zip file, upload it to your server and put a link to in on your web page.

that is the basics, if you need to track how many people downloadit and if you are going to sell it, then you can just install shopping cart , there are free ones, then sign up with paypal and use that to take credit cards, etc.

very simple, really, you can also start with a free template for a website is you want.
