Yes, you're right. The Virtuemart component for Joomla! uses AJAX to update the shopping cart items. Pretty slick.
But yeah... we're talking about 2 different animals here. I've never played with AJAX scripting so I'm not even sure you can create a complete website with it. (or if you'd even want to)
I'm a big fan of Joomla! so that would be my suggestion.

Ajax (Asynchronous Javascript And XML) a group of interrelated web development techniques used for creating interactive web applications or rich Internet applications while joomla.Joomla! is a free open source content management system for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets. You cannot compared it because joomla is a CMS not a programming language
ok cool , so AJAX and Joomla! r 2 completely different techniques ,,, and i can use Joomla , and take Ajax in small parts in my project , right ?
i just dont wanna cry over my website if it got hacked , just coz joomla or ajax security holes ....
I've tried Joomla, bundled it with AEC and CMB.. I honestly didn't care for it. It's easy and versatile but I haven't really found a great CMS that I like.
Joomla! migh be full of security holes (I don't know, I don't use it) but AJAX is not something that comes full of security holes! If you program badly then yes, there will be security issues but if you use it correctly, then no, there will be no issues!
