It's a great link to have but not necessary to rank #1. We see a lot of websites ranking in tough niches with millions of results - without the dmoz listing.

As most others said, it is a good to have but not a must. You absolutely should not waste to much time on trying to get one as there is other venues where the same level of effort could have a much bigger return on your investment.

I was told about and read a post over on webpronews.com a while back that said Directories are becoming less important for Google. I don't know if thats totally true but Google did take the suggestion of submitting your site to directories out of their quality guidelines. What that means... who knows?

there are a lot of site out there rank better without linking to DMOZ, I think that as long as you targeted well your keywords and link to relevant site you can rank better.....I think DMOZ is not that influential unlike before.

DMOZ will list your site if it's good and find it on it's own. Submitting to dmoz is a hassle and that same effort can be better spent elsewhere.
I have a site listed on dmoz and it wasn't worth the effort.

DMOZ's pages have different PR. My 3 sites are listed in deep 0PR DMOZ pages.
And there are so many "happy" links in 7PR DMOZ pages.

Time can matter
Hi,
Instead of waiting for a year or pay a tons of money for a DMOZ editor to get listed in DMOZ use the time & money to get listed in many good links directories like electronsonline.com & you will get a quite descent result. Actually if you use the waiting period for DMOZ or half the money you would spend for immediate inclusion you can get a better result from using that time & money for normal directories submissions .

If you pay anything or offer to pay anything then your site can be banned for good from DMOZ. If anyone asks you for money for a list in DMOZ report them, they will be banned as editors.
It is free to submit a site, but because we are not a listing service we cannot say when the site will be reviewed for a possible listing, can be from a few days to a few years.
Best chance is to find the correct category, offer to only one category (unless one is a Regional category), read the guidelines on site titles and descriptions and only submit once, we do not lose sites and are only rejected if they do not fit our guidelines.

DMOZ still matter in SEO rankings. Many web sites include DMOZ listing, and that’s the most important characteristic of DMOZ. Authority, credibility and reputation of DMOZ is famous, those 3 magical words google likes the most.
