What do you use directories for?
For anyone using directories, what do you use them for?
I usually use them to increase the amount of backlinks to my websites, which increases the value of the domain during sales.

Aside from submitting my sites, I use them for entertainment purposes. I sometimes find very interesting sites in some directories. Like I found a site that sells "legal" ecstacy pills.

I actually stopped using general link directories in favor of niche directories and other relevant backlinks that I obtain. This has actually boosted my sites/pages in the Google SERPS.

most of people and me use directories as backlink resource.
because directory is not a best place for searching something, because it takes time.
we can find our stuffs by using search engine.

Think again
Because good directories limit amount of spam, you will get 20 - 30 results right to the point whereas Google, for example, will spit at you 10M links and let you dig a pile of rubbish sites until you get blue before you find something you're looking for.
Smart money say: directories here to stay.
How else you explain every moron these days has been starting new directory

I suppose that makes niche directories all the more appealing.

That's true, here's what WebProNews says in an interview with Google officials:
Question: Recently, you removed this suggestion: "Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!" from your guidelines. Is there any chance that you will be discounting these kinds of links for ranking value in future?
Google’s Answer: There's always the chance that we'll discount directory links in the future. What we were seeing was quite a few novice people would see the "directory" recommendation and go out and just try to submit to a ton of directories, even if some of the directories were lower-quality or even fly-by-night directories that weren't great for users. Right now we haven't changed how we're weighting directory links--we've only removed the directory suggestion from the webmaster guidelines.
Translation: Possibly.

Sure for backlinks. Also to make subdomains to be indexed faster. But unfortunately not many directories accept subdomains...

maybe you can generate traffic from directories if you will go back in time, in 2002 -2005.
In these days, traffic that you get from most of directories go to 0.
Directories are useful for backlinks, only good old (and sometime paid) directories can send any traffic.
