Best Directory Script
I was wondering which is the best directory script, according to people's experience.
Lets say what makes a good directory...
1. Multi-level category system
2. Search engine friendly pages. Can generate plain HTML or atleast staic URL pages .
3. Apache search engine friendly URL rewriting. No .php extensions catgories should be like "directory.com/travel" like DMOZ listing.
4. Integration with Paypal or 2checkout. (although not a very important point)
5. A good control panel (This is one thing, on ething which is common in all scripts).
6. Cross-references.
7. No tracking of clicks on links. like which is done in Sezza.com . All link should be static in nature.
8. Not too expensive.
I think this will be all.
Aaron has suggested a good listing.

Another listing can be found at hotscripts.

the script I told you from Biz Directory for $700 is still the one I recommend, I don't know if that is too expensive though.

$700 for a script with this many features is not expensive at all. That's assuming that it has everything you are looking for. If you were to hire a developer at $50/hr to build a similar script it would cost you more than $700. You might also be able to find someone to build something like this for much less. You never know.
IMO the best script of all is to build your own to fit your needs. Less problems and headaches in the end.

From looking at their demo, BosDirectory doesn't have static links for categories.

adsense has made a cross referencing directory script a thing much in demand.

What are you talking about, $50/hr . I can provide you expert php developers for $3-$4/hr.... And believe me really really expert people....
I don`t think I am going to buy that one for $700, I can hire two-three developers, and develope my own script, with all these and better features incorporated, and I am going to sell it for 50$ a piece with full rights...

For $800 you can pay either of my friends a PHP developer or and ASP developer to build you what you want as long as its off the books
... or outsource it to any contacts you may have in asia for even cheaper.

I've set up http://eslgo.com/language/ with WSNlinks. I haven't integrated with 2checkout or paypal yet, but supposedly I can.

It's an option you can set up in the admin panel:
For example:

The thing is, that means plenty of delay. If I remember right, bluefind spent a lot of time trying to develop a script itself - and in the end, decided on a biz-directory foundation.
When developing your own script, you're talking about a big invest in time and money - and patience. You would also need a working model for selling your script, and that takes more time and money - the promotion takes time and money.
What appears to be a cheap and easy road almost surely cannot be in reality.
Also - an established script not only offers an established product on demand, but also a proper tested one - for example, without over security issues.

What is the difference between the $50 script and the $700 script?
AWall19's site looks almost the same as their $700 site. If so, would you recommend the $700 version?
thanks,
Mike

What are you working on toolkit? I'm based only a few miles from you, and work on a number of directories myself, with more in the pipeline... PM me if you like.

I'm a long-time fan of gossamer-threads.com's Links program. I prefer the old perl version because I can hack it (but mostly because I know how it thinks), but everyone seems to have moved on to the mysql version.
Con: If you're cross-referencing categories, the old perl version tops out at a few hundred categories unless you conjure up some work-arounds.
