What is PR#?

I see people talking about PR directories, what are they?

I know they are web directories but what does PR mean and what does the # represent?

While I'm on the subject is it good to be listed in as may directories as you can be? I'm assuming the answer is yes, just for the links back to your site.

If the number represents the importance of the directory (1 being low) do you need to be posted in a certain number of directories before you will get listed in a PR2.

How do you know what level to submit your link to?

Thanks,
Kevin

The # after PR (i.e. PR1, PR5) means the site's Google PageRank. PageRank is on a scale of 0 to 10. Sites with a PR10 have a lot of links back to them. Sites with PR1 have very few. People like to get links from high PR sites (and directories) because that boosts their site's PR.

You can install the google toolbar. Or if you use Firefox as your browser you can use the Search Status plug in. In addition, a lot of directory lists show the PR of the web directories in their lists.

Please do not put too much value into Page Rank. Remember that it would be a lot better to have all your keywords ranked on the first page with a PR of 2 than to have a PR of 8 and have none of your keywords ranked.

PR is just a remark given by Google search engine for popularity. But, imo one should target on the SERP more as the higher your keywords will be in search ranking the more sales you will get. The page rank in only useful to those who wants to make money by selling advertising space on their site.

True, but he was just asking for the meaning of PR
It can't be helped that a lot of people put much attention to PR, especially site owners that doesn't know how to do proper SEO for their site, or for those site owners wanting to start learning SEO - PR is one of the basic terminologies they will learn.
