Dmoz question - still waiting....

i submitted a site to dmoz.

how long does it take to get approved... on average? and worst case?

how could i inquire as to the status or how much longer it will be? or would this just annoy the editor and risk my site not getting approved?

resubmitting i would think is a no-no, since they take this as a duplicate submission?

thanks to those who respond

Hi Losangel27,

A listing in DMOZ can take some time..

My site was added fairly quickly (2 months) but others have found the process of getting listed, takes months - sometimes years

My advice to you is check the status of your site (to ensure they have recived it) and simply forget about it. Carry on gathering links for your website and hopefully you'll get a listing in their directory sooner rather than later.

You can enquire about the status of your submission here - http://resource-zone.com/forum/forum...1970ba9f4&f=22

Excellent advice - getting into DMOZ has sent some webmasters mad and really isn't worth all time and effort that could be spent following other promotion avenues.

Ok the best case is 24 hours if you have a relate site for the movie category I edit.

As a dmoz editor if your sites is bad we will keep it in unreviewed until it gets better or we delete it if it is spam. But we never tell you

Looking at your website it looks like a 1 page website BUT ITS NOT! Why have you not put the navigation in the correct place? Keep the keyword rich footer links and add naviagtion.

I love the attitude of those ODP editors:

those people really are a-holes over there though. they could care less about your sites. Most categories have editors that havn't logged in in a year. The only reason they have thousands of sites pilled up is because they let them pile up, i just see no excuse for it. They should pull the plug on dmoz IMO

There's a bunch of editors, some are some aren't, on both counts.
Both of your statements seems to put them all in the same group.

I really do care about my category and often help webmasters so don’t group us all under the same umbrella.

I do sometimes see peoples point because what they do over at Zeal is the most successfully run directory I have been with but getting a listing in Zeal gives you such little in return for hits or PR...maybe thats why it works so well

Did you read the post? The submitter was a little over the top.

I did not read the full post, just basically read the lack of openness in something that I thought was supposed to be open...

I find the ODP as a great example as to how to run a directory. Follow their example and do nothing like they do things!!!

For Starters it’s webmasters who make a directory, not editors. Without webmasters what would a directory be?

Webmasters are the consumers and supporters of a directory and like with any business should be treated with respect.

It is a directories obligation to promote and market itself with the intention of attracting visitors and users of the service. In doing so you are essentially marketing your submitter’s services.

The ODP editor’s attitudes and disrespect for the webmaster has gotten out of hand. Everybody should be sending letters of complaints to Google about ODP treatment of webmasters and Goggles continued support of them.

The problem is at the end of the day they are not a company - they don't know each other personally and any of the editors are free to voice their opinion.

If it had been thought about beforehand the whole concept behind DMOZ is riddled with flaws..... Im supprised they went ahead with it and more especially - let it get this far out of hand.

I was looking at wow directory - its great - well edited listings - excellent category structures - do you allow the results to be used on other peoples pages - like dmoz does?

You really put DMOZ to shame by all accounts. I submitted my site the other day - added within 24 hours - I was very impressed

He certainly wasn't very tactful, but he did have a good point. If your business plan centers on getting a DMOZ listing, it was a bad plan in the first place. It won't have a huge effect on your traffic, it's just one more factor.

Thanks Jay,
We will be going open source when the database is developed better. I want at least 50,000 submissions first. Right now we have webmasters using our search engine but not the directory. We get a lot of use and traffic from Search 22 who uses our search results.

The open source will be real time updated not the poor method of the dump used by ODP.
