Smart Google
Many of the Directories who have filled their main page with affiliate links and crap ended up with a PR 0. Google has been doing its homework! I knew that adding excessive links would bring the PR down but never before would affiliate links bring you PR 0. Kool Google!!!

Sstoner3221 I thought WoW Directory had PR 7 and now it is 6. I don't see it on that list of yours.

Are we sure this is due to excessive links on-page and not maybe that they were getting a bunch of crap links from link farms or whatever? just curious.

I think most of the pr loss on these sites is because webmasters got discouraged about getting more links due to the pr issue. Now that they are more in tune with updates whether it's once a month or every 3 months, I think they will try harder

A couple of those he mentioned have been penalized. Looks like Google might be getting more aggressive in protecting the quality of their index.

Yes, and I’m happier then a pig in a poo pile. Now I can run a directory and not a PR link farm. I had to stop selling ROS links, something I have been doing long before the page rank system, about 4 years due to insinuations of selling page rank. Gee how is a free directory supposed to support itself? The daily mail from webmasters wanting to be on higher PR pages was unbelievable. I happily announced it on several forums, I’m sorry if I missed this one. The traffic has not changed any, in fact it has increased but the nuisance mail from the page rank hounds has decreased already.

A lot of folks who start directories believe in build it and they will come directory marketing. That actually used to work in the 80’s but today you need a well developed topic structure and need to market or the site will never make it. I think Google did a good job in rating directories this time. A lot of PR 7’s were handed out that were undeserved. The average good directory is a PR 6 and has been for some time. Anything above that is an above average directory like Blue Find and Seven Seek and it’s not just links that make them above average. Look at the search engine density; that’s what makes a good directory. A directory with good search engine density is a directory that’s going to have traffic.

Can you define "good search engine density"?
Does that mean that it can be searched by the SE's or that it has a good native SE?

To me, search engine density is how many pages I have indexed in the search engines or how many times my site is listed for a certain keyword phrase.

I think search engine density means, number of pages indexed by Search engines.
More the number of pages you have indexed, better directory you got.
SE density of bluefind, wowdirectory is amazing.

Better add Seven Seek to the list as well. Over 80,000 pages indexed by Google!
