How to Find Quality Niche Directories and Social Sites
Other post inspired me to write little bit about niche directories. Niche directories can give way better results than submissions in hundreds regular ones.
How to find niche directory:
Trust Google, it will give you some good results if you type your niche and directory. Example: Design Directory
Results: http://www.designdirectory.com, http://www.designfirms.org, http://www.web-designers-directory.org, http://www.firmlist.com ... Good ones, right!
Go deep into your niche
The same way, Google something more specific like web design directory, print design websites, print production directory etc.
Use different lists of directories
There are a lot of websites which provide directory lists. I like www.DirectoryCritic.com which gives you over 10 000 directories including niche directories.
Use niche social sites
Niche social sites is the same thing like niche directory but they provide extra services like bookmarking, messaging, forums, profiles etc. If you are a doctor you should go with social site like www.care2.com, or stick with www.sphinn.com if you are SEO expert.
Who are you?
Are you? Immigrant, soldier, business women, gay, community leader, geek, blogger, teacher, artist, older person... Belive it or not but you can apply even this to specific niche. Example: http://www.queerfilter.com - social site for gay people, http://milblogging.com - if you are in military, http://www.geekswithblogs.com - if you are the geekiest nerd ever, http://bandweblogs.com - social site for musicians etc.
As example I can say, my friend joined Geeks With Blogs after my advice. Week later big company from Chicago found him through his post and offered $ XXX XXX contract for services.
Oh, almost forget, here one if you are old person who blog: http://jenett.org/ageless/
Go local
Local directory could be considered as niche as well because they host only local businesses and websites. There are bunch local directories for every country, big city, or state.

Don't underestimate Directoy Critic. Yes, 99% directories there are dead or spammy but it is still a great resource to find some quality niche directories as well as new directories. Just make sure to browse only directories with good pr and high reputation.

Ok, here my point. I was creating backinks for one of my car dealers and Directory Critic gave me 18 niche directories for automotive sites. Some of them already hosted links for other Honda dealerships in our area. I added my client in 6-7 directories and he was approved. Why not? It is good to be in some niche directories next to competitors.
Another example, is a hospital which work with me. I was using Directory Critic to add them in health sites. I agree, not many good sites but still... it is like a bargain book store, you need time to find something good.

Well Sergey, you just made my and John's point sound laud and clear
Yes, "Directory Critic" has maybe 100 good and useful links (less real good one) but this is it.
The problem is with incompetent moron (Cricket, please don't kill me if that guy is a member of this forum ) who's running that list. These days every Idiot has his own version of that list with a few hundreds of Indian directories added to what is already spam infestation pushed in forums throats. You cannot turn around without seeing another list and then a few dozens of "Thank you" posts for something in old times man would be given 50 lashes.
When you're perpetuating something that you know is bad, you are claiming legitimacy of something that should be condemned. If you want to know why I'm saying that, then read this post http://www.v7n.com/forums/web-direct...rectories.html again and you will get an idea with what in mind real directory list should be build on.

In other words directory critic only has 100 site that aren't dead or spam.
Actually the name of the site has alway bugged me. This is the definition of critic--> One who forms and expresses judgments of the merits, faults, value, or truth of a matter.
As you point out the site has 100 reasonable listings and 9900 crap ones, how can they claim to be a critic of any sort?

You can find it on the second page of WhenWeSEO's "Best Value" directory list. It's been there since May of 2009. It's also in their free directory list.

Yep, I love care2. Submission there gives you a powerfull link and little traffic (my client who is a doctor receiver extra 2-3 people a day).

Anyone choosing directory submissions over any other way of building links needs their head examined.

that is a good way to search niche directories, and Google results are so accurate that most of the searches are our needful ones
and yea most of the directories in Directorycritic are filled with SPAM, too many links stuffed in those directories. the dir owners dont even bother to review the sites submitted for approval.
So better submit to Quality dirs only who offer quality backlinks to our site. they charge for inclusion review but still most of those are worth paying.

Focus on the big directories, and maybe the top few listed in your niche in google. Aside from that, don't waste your time. As others have said, the quality of online directories is questionable at best and the number of people that actually use said directories is minimal, remember to get a balance between working for the search engines and working for the people. You can have a 0 PR and have a good number of visitors, and have a high PR and a low number of visitors.
Rather than directories, focus more on forums, social networks, etc. where you can clearly see there is HUMAN activity.

Objection sir. I work extremely hard on my directory and I take no pleasure in rejecting almost all submissions. They are rejected for one simple reason "You are not up to scratch".
Today I still have PR0 - but serps is Top10, but it hasn't always been so. The directory isn't perfect but gee I don't like someone saying "don't waste your time."
Directories do have HUMANS behind them and the best of them will share their thoughts that they cannot believe how much work is involved in setting up, promoting, and maintaining them.
My apologies, I just got a little uptight then
