i would like to create a directory. what script should i use

i'dlike ti to be free. what can you recommend please ?

will i earn much thru this?

You will find a few free scripts with a simple Google search for free directory scripts. As for making any money chances are you will be wasting your time, however if you want to work very hard for 2 or 3 years and have a lot of money for promotion you could be the next big directory.

Agreed, you will need to invest and have to take lots of efforts to earn money from directory. We all know about the life of directory these days.. not more than 2 years..

Well i would advice you not to get into this at all.
Every single day there are a bunch of new directories that come out which don't last for long.
The competition is rough , if you are not willing to spend alot of money in that in order to promote your directory then better don't even think about it

as for as script is concernd it is your personal opinion but i would reccomend Phpld,
making money from directory!!!! hah
i would nt dicourage u but u wouldnt get something big in one night, just start this issue(directory) as a hobby but take it serious and give it time may b u make smthng after year or 2
but dnt expect much dUdE

Better you can search on best script on script directories. And then you can get the feed back of that selected script.

Probably Best of the Web, Joe Ant make some dollars. Not too many other directories though.

Yahoo directory, business.com, romow.com (I like this directory a lot) make some bucks also along with lot's of other quality directories. The directory industry is a little screwed up right now but the quality directory owners who continue to invest in there directory i think will be still successful in the directory industry for a long time. To many people create free directories just to make a fast paycheck few weeks or few months later by selling them.

Think long and hard before creating a directory. If you create one, create a strict set of guildelines and stick to them. If you have to reject 10 listings for not following your rules then do it. No one wants there site listed in a spammy directory.

PHPLD paid script is a good directory script to use. They are slowly improving the directory script with each upgrade and there free script has less features so spend some money and get a script that you'll have lifetime upgrades on.

A lot of good info above. IMO, the directories that are making money right now hit the market in time, and trying to jump in now with a me-too product would be a waste.

It's time consuming to do it right, and unless you create a niche product in an area that isnt already saturated, it'd be too little too late. Instead of going into a market where there are entrenched leaders with deeper pockets... try to make something new. My 2 cents.

My advice would be try getting a script other than phpld, because you will get some difference which improves credibility.

Thanks for recommending phpLD. We just recently released a new version with Widgets [link removed]that have been quite popular with our users. As others have pointed out, entering the market with something that is the same as everyone else is probably not going to get you as far as coming up with something unique such as a niche directory or a local directory. Both of these are popular. Good luck!

Some paid directory scripts are also very good (Indexu for example).
It may be worth investing a minimum for software quality (even if free scripts can be very good).
