Biz directory 'cross-references'
Hi,
if anybody owns biz-dir.org, could you explain what cross-references refers too?
is it simply 'related categories' like you see on other directories or is this something a little different?
It seems to be a little different with adding references by location as oppose to other directories i've seen which do subject.
how does this work, are all the countries/cities of the entire world already loaded into the db?

cross referencing means two things for that script
1.) local subdirectories for each category.
2.) sites listed in the local areas are cross referenced out to the general categories

Basically if its a paid submission, you are getting more bang for your buck. Plus, it makes sense that your site may pertain to more than a single category.

Adding a site to more than one category is nothing to do with cross reference.
Cross Reference can be according to two things..
1. Category - Country just like done by Shawn http://www.uncoverthenet.com
2. Category - category for eg.. in DMOZ or Yahoo

Basically the script adds all the topics in what most use as the world or general directory to all of the localities. Using WoW as a reference it has 16,718 topics in the world directory and 15962 Localities. This gives you 266,852,716 cross-referenced topics.

stoner3221, are you the owner of wow?
Ok let me get this straight, basically each and every category has a 'cross-reference' to all the countries & cities in the world.
So each listing is both references in a particular category and its locality?
So in essence, a cross-reference is simliar to 'related categories' excpet that it has to do with location/coutnries/cities

Bruce is one of the better and respected names today in web directories.
Related or similar categories and cross reference has lots of difference.
By cross referencing categories and location, you get thousands of pages, which makes your directory quiet big, and webmasters gets extra links..
And if you are thinking of cross referencing categories - cities...
You must be dreaming, or you would Choke up the Googlebot ..

You would need a heck of a lot of PR on such large sites to get them properly indexed - that's probably why the Wow directory has around 100,000 pages actually indexed, as opposed to the theoretical 266 million content pages (plus additional submit URL and suggest category pages).

No doubt about that. It shows 88,000 pages now.
After an initial boost in spidering, most of the large sites start seeing pages dropped as time goes on.
Bluefind is only showing between 7-13,000 pages now with a ToolBar PR 8.

Here is where the cross referencing makes the difference since all the sites are in the main directory “world on my site”. Google only needs to have the 16,722 world directory pages indexed in order to provide that vital link to the submitter. The sites in the locality pages that get indexed will provide additional links to the submission. It’s really a great link system to work with. It can be a bit confusing at first to figure out and some users of the script do not set it up to cross reference or set it up to do considerably less cross referencing.

From my observations Google indexes a huge number of pages at first. WoW had over 200,000 pages indexed when we first started. Google then starts dropping pages with little or no content. The numbers go up and down a lot. Mine bounce from over 100,000 to as low 72,000 sometimes within a few days. This up and down trend happens to all directories. Content seems to be the trick to keeping the numbers fluctuating in an acceptably high range.

It’s fairly simple. The way I have it set up a site submitted for example to Albany, New York in Business to Business would be listed in Albany, New York, United Stated and the World Directory in the same topic giving the submitter 4 listings.
