Well, I wouldn't really say that it is a must or that its that important for SEO... There are tons of directories out there yet there are only few that can help your site. Aside from those known directories like Dmoz or Yahoo, the other one's are difficult to find and in order for you to know which ones those are, you'd have to submit to yet another thousands of 'em...

Free directories will be slow to approve submissions because it is not uncommon for some of them to get 500+ submissions in a day. If the directory owner is actually editing submissions, and properly categorizing them, it is a large burden on time for so many submissions. When it comes to free directories I would recommend submitting to the newest free directories you can find. Do that first and then submit to the older and better established directories.
