Arrow Directory Structures

How do people get their directory structure for general directories?

Manually typing few thousand categories and sub-categories? or taking Yahoo or DMOZ directory and whacking them a bit? Or is there another method?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Buy a script with the categories already in there.

Manually is the best bet, with doing it different than anybody else, make yours a little unique, so no one claims your a copycat type site

i c.

but that's at least few thousand categories...

wow.. your names must be tired from typing.

I'm at the point where the script is mostly done. Now I need to populate the contents. Hmmm.. hard decision.

thanks for the info Shawn.

Not to mention that scraping taxonomies and hierarchical structures from other directories involves copyright issues.

Not really, Dmoz actually allows you to use their directory/license.

http://rdf.dmoz.org/

Anyways, I will probably create several directories.. one using the Dmoz or Yahoo and then create several unique directory structure manually.

Ack! Forgot about DMOZ. Perhaps I should modify my statement thus:-

Not to mention that using taxonomies and hierarchical structures from other directories/sites without permission involves copyright issues.

Woz,

Copying directory categories is not wrong from what I have 'heard' and 'read'. And if it is going against copyright issues, it sure doesn't look like its being enforced unfort.

But again, from what I have read, as long as your not copying the descriptions from a url listed on a site, its fine to take from the category structure.

Then again, forums are not the best place to get legal advice....
