Directory ranking question : between steady PR increase and PR "jump"

Fellow directory owners and webmasters,

I am not a PR freak. I dont really care about it unless it concerns an aged quality site with pr 7 and up. As far directories go, many directory owners find it difficult to maintain their pr.

The recent PR generosity by Google that seemingly lifted the penalty on established directories (most of them deserved their PR back) has been dicsussed in different forums.

In this post, I am not referring to those directories simply because they already had PR in the past and were established sites to begin with.

Do you guys think that there is a difference (and meaning) between directories that gained PR (from 0 to 1 to 2 and on) as compared to those that witnessed PR jumps (0 to 3 or up)

Is it pure manipulation or is it indicative of something correctly (or deceitfully) done by the directory owner?

All feedbacks appreciated.

Happy New Year to all V7ners and non-member guest readers!

I haven't seen any PR generosity to directories but I haven't been looking at the undeveloped directories. Many directories that I know and follow have had hand jobs by Google with the PR pegged and it never visually goes up or down.

Talking about PR hand job, the first time I came across something like this was when I was reading a post on Aaron's seobook blog. They were talking about how the famous JoeAnt's PR was manually restored after its PR dropped to 3. So basically it's a fact!(?)

If you remember the post, not long after Aaron Wall brought that to the attention of the SEO community the manual penalty on JoeAnt was removed and the PR returned to 5.

PR penalties can be removed, and they are a manual block on a site. Generally the site will not pass PR internally or to its outbounds. They are locked into a number, funnily enough it is usually 3, as I guess Google considers that anything PR4 and above is considered *marketable*

Google has been manually adding and removing pr from directories for along time, it has also happened to uncoverthenet a few times. I really don't think there is a difference between the type of pr's, for those that have been around since all the pr maddness began might remember that google started handing out the pr drops in batches. It appears to me that this is what we are seeing now.

I don't think there is anything to worry about a directory that goes from 0 to 3 in one jump. A PR3 is fairly easy to attain. Even a PR4 can be attained legitimately, although it is not as easy as the old days. Because of the exponential nature of PageRank getting to PR5 and above requires much more effort.

I think for some reason, Google's penalty on PR for some directories expired and the PR was restored. I experienced this for my oldest directory which went back to PR3 after being in PR0 Hell for 2 years. There are some directories, however, which remained at PR0 and doesn't seem to have their penalties removed. Probably these directories were penalised much later and so were not affected by this apparent time-limit?
