Submit to New Directory
I've just put up a new directory at http://www.axelis.com and hope you'll all submit your sites. This isn't like most directories, so don't be put off by the need to "register." It's so you'll have access to the control panel where you can change your links, add new links, etc. The idea is to actually "subscribe" to a category then put that category link list on your site as a links page. That part of it is still in the works as I need to get a few more links in there before I can test it properly. Meanwhile the site is a PR4 and gets googled often enough to make it worthwhile having a your link in there anyway.
This is all new and development is ongoing, but the directory stuff all works, and if I can get a few more links in there I should have the link page distribution worked out within the next couple days.

"Once your link is approved and inserted into the category you must place code that will be given to you on your site. This code is intended to be a links page on your site. It must be linked to from your domain level index page."
"If you are listed in a category with 50 other links, you have 50 other sites listing your link."
This sounds vey much like a link farm to me...

No, if I remember correctly, links2you included a VAST amount of spam in your email box. Of course I could be mistaking it with something else, but in either case the one thing I do remember about it is it was unethical as hell. All this is, is a reciprocal link exchange. It's no different than any other link exchange where you pay a fee to be included in a directory sturcture that is distrubuted to all the members. The only real difference is that this is free. It's a bit different on a functional level, but it's just a reciprocal link exchange and nothing more. You put your link in a category, and then you get to put that category up as a links page. The links are submitted and must be approved for content and formatting. I'm not just willy nilly putting links up for the sake of putting links up. This is an effort to make exchanging relevant links a bit less of a hassle.

most reciprocal link networks do not usually cost that much in money, but the links do have actual associated costs and reciprocal link programs do generally have problems

Sounds like the primary purpose is to manipulate link popularity and search engine rankings as opposed to providing a useful general directory. Regardless of whether the links in each category are on topic or not, it'll still be considered for what it actually is.
I'd have to guess that with each addition you're only increasing the size of the target and making it easier to identify. If it gets large enough to actually influence search results, I doubt it will be ignored.

According to this:
Every links page on every site on the internet is a link farm. It also states what a link farm REALLY is. A place where some site has a deal going that benefits primarily itself.
This:
Is five years old. Most of the information there is outdated and a lot of it is currently irrelevant. If you think what I'm putting together is anything like what is described in either of those articles then I think you need to go and actually take a look at what I'm doing. Perhaps I haven't described it properly or something, but I can assure you it is not what you seem to think it is.

Being five years old makes it more relevant and not less...

a link farm by any other name...
even linkstoyou.com changed from a link farm to a link trading forum. research the linkstoyou program. it was a link farm and it basically (if not exactly) paralleled the concept / system you are describing

Let me try to give my opinion as webmaster. I have to put my site in as many directories as I can. I don't have the time or nerves to register accounts just to do it, nor to fill my precious pages with useless links.
As a directory webmaster think like this:
You live because I SEND MY LINKS TO YOU.
Don't ask me to pay ... google is free, and the best.
Don't make me put your link on my pages ... there are hundreds of other directories. If I put all the links, imagine my site.
Don't ask too many info: site name, url and description is all you need.
More about it: How to make a good directory
MAKE IT SIMPLE or you'll have an empty directory

Heh. Since when is a directory an original idea? I checked out your directory, not bad, but the color scheme lacked contrast. People go to a directory and/or search engine for information. Asthetics are mostly irrelevant. I did, however, add a site. -Thanks.
It may interest many to know that I have been working on it, as Shawn suggests. In fact, due to a complete lack of understanding by the few webmasters who signed up with the original concept it quickly became clear it wasn't going to work anyway. Now it's a standard directory and search engine. The search engine side of it is currently limited due to the way I'm having to spider stuff. I'll be doing some work on that this week so spider performance should increase significantly soon, at least I hope it will. Meanwhile, the main page of the site is already a PR4, so go submit your links at http://www.axelis.com!

May be I isn't right, but I always return back to the nice directories - they are remembered. I understand, that the basic purpose of a directory the information, but I shall search for it on a site made with soul! For example: Allestra, Infowebworld, Webatlas, Uncoverthenet, Anthonyparsons. Don't make the identical directories - them so much!
