How to plan for directory

I want to start a directory as fun and would be serious if there will be any opportunity for money. But now i am in the stage of planning.
Your comments would be helpful for me because most of you have already passed from this stage.I am planning one niche and one general directory.
Thank You.

Plan your directory and focus on serving consumers and not webmasters. The key to a long term and prosperous directory is to focus on consumers. With that focus in mind webmasters will be drawn to your directory and submit their sites.

Do not wait only for submissions to fill in the categories. Go ahead and include quality sites into the categories. Focus on quality rather than quantity and be picky with the sites that you allow into your directory. Build your database and then go ahead and make it public. This may be a longer road to take but in the end you will be much more satisfied with the end results.

I think you have to look at it from a webmasters perspectice as well as a consumers. When I was submitting my sites to different paid directories I was always thinking "how can I get the most value out of each submission I pay for?" The ideas I gained from that perspective are the foundation of my directory.

Obviously both parties make up the whole. The key is to provide good sites to the consumers and traffic to the listings. The reason I mention that a directory should focus on the consumer is because many directories that are built today are set up mainly for SEO purposes. I understand that many of the submissions to directories are done mainly for linkbuilding but I like to believe that a directory should serve both parties and not just webmasters.

This is my opinion and it is the way that I have managed Massive Links for the last 3 years. I guess I just like to believe that consumers will one day use directories along with the search engines to find their results. Who knows?

Well my premium submission was just approved so I'll be watching my traffic stats!

By the way, I agree 100% that the directory should be something people can use. My name's on that thing so I want people to like it. Maybe then they'll like me a little...

Bring out something unique that will stand different from others. Remember you are competing with tons of directories. if you cannot find time or cannot spend time in building a directory, start with a niche and then once you build your confidence step ahead. My personal experience is building and promoting a directory is the hardest one i ever faced. Initially it would be very difficult and most visitors will visit/pay you once you get decent pagerank. Dont just go for buying links or spending money, just allow plenty of time for your directory and then you will find results. I wish you good luck!
