Good Grief...
LookSmart never gave it a chance... and just how much did they pay for it in 2000???

Thats a bit of a shock. A lot of people overpaid for things back in 2000.

Actually, when I that article stating that Zeal was bought for $20,000,000, I registered BlueFind. It was kind of one of my inspirations.

I started a directory as well but it never got off the ground. I have 2 domain names at the moment I am supposed to have directories on but neither of them do.
Still go to write the directory script, cant afford to pay for one, unless anyone knows of any decent free ones..

And to think I wasted all that time last week with their annoying quiz just to get the ability to submit a few sites.
Can't say I'll miss it though.
(Btw immo, php links directory is reasonable and free. Easy to modify and a good base to start from.)

Won't miss it, I too couldn't be bothered with the games.
However I'm surprised they're not gifting it or selling it off cheap. Makes me wonder what the lawyers are doing behind the scenes? or am I just battle weary?
As for directory software - Immo I've created a thread in your honor...
Directory Scripts - which do you use?

...they are not selling it... ??? hmmm...
What would be the point to close it?
Do you think it's a burdern to manage?
I think they might have something up their sleeve for the future. I just don't see the point in shutting something down flat out like that.

It appears from the statement that it was a money hole. It made no money and cost a fortune. Stupid management if you ask me.

Amazon was/is for a long time but it was still valued for a significant amount. Surely someone would have picked it up and run with it?

Yeah, it is hard to believe they are just deleting the site.

When they purchased Zeal they wanted advanced technology of some kind that was associated with it and that was the reason for the high price. At least that’s what the Zeal developers told me. As a directory itself we were barley done with the topic structure. Its worth more as a business write off then they could sell it for.

yeah but can you write off the site and still use the advanced technology in future uses? I would think with the purchase being for the technology that that would have be considerd a loss as well to get any real value out of it as a loss.
