I use SSL, php link directory and esyndicat pro. Out of the three I like esyndicat the best, it has some really nice features (not perfect in anyway) and the people there are really helpful offering fee database migration and free custom mods if you ask them (not anything major but for a coding noob like me it's a great help).

If you go at http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/ at the left sidebar you will see that under latest version there is the download link for phpld 2 which is free.

I had over 2 weeks taken away from my life and made close to a 100 posts in their "support forum" for the script I payed for to actually get it 70% functioning as i want it to...
