Lightbulb What makes a Quality web directory?

I am doing research before I try my hand at web directory on my own, I have done alot of research already and now seeking others to give there opinions and thoughts on this subject (also if you know of any quality directories that I could review please let me know).

Here are a few questions to help get things started:

1) Should a directory offer deep linking?

2) What about a article directory, should a web directory have this feature added on?

3) How many external links per page?

4) Whats the best directory you use?

It is good you are doing research before attempting to develop a Web Directory.

CNFG-SI Web Directory Sites Interactive. It is a good example of a General Web Directory that accepts Free Submission for Regular Links.

V7N Directory is a strong example of what a professionally managed Web Directory can become.

I do not much feel that a Directory should offer deep linking. Relevant links are achieved through submission and as the directory grows.

I do feel that an article submission or directory is a plus to demonstrating content and offers customers more abilities.

One to Two external links is enough.

Best Regards:

1) Should a directory offer deep linking?

Definately, SEO firms love them and quite often want to link only to a deep link. For instance Hyundai will only want to link to Elantra.

2) What about a article directory, should a web directory have this feature added on?

Only if it's original content.

3) How many external links per page?

As many as fits on one page, then recategorise. A category's first page will gain PR over time but then the second and following pages will not. SEO firms chase PR.

4) Whats the best directory you use?

There are so few. I actually found one that has PR on a listing's details page. Whether it's a good one is still open to contention and controversial so I won't name it.

There are some good reasons for allowing sub-domain submissions but as a general rule I prefer not to accept them. If the website is designed well and takes advantage of free tools offered by the search engines then the inner pages should easily be found. Just taking any sub-domain turns a directory into a real toilet. Editorial integrity is vital to running a successful directory.

What makes a quality directory? It's content of course.

All the bells and whistles mean nothing if the actual listings are grammatically wrong, duplicated across hundreds or thousands of other directories and if the editors don't outright deny garbage listings.

I prefer directories without a lot of advertisements and lins because there's less likely that someone will visit your website. You also want to make sure without a doubt that the directory you are submitting to is DoFollow otherwise what is the point?

For a quality web directories.

I do not like deep links on my directories! Many of them are not quality and the URLs are not friendly!

I'm sure it's just terribly annoying that people actually want to make a living from their wook. We should all work for free and live off welfare.
