Niche directories are much harder to get attention for.
This has been my experience in the last few dasy since i started promoting mine.
But there are jsut soooo many general directories that I start to think they will become redundant faster than a niche one.

Of course many here will bark at me for saying this, but its worth having a look at some directories out there and try telling one from another...

I am going all out for my niche ones. I target a specific market and, although harder to get started, i believe in the long-run I may just gain more from it. I also believe niche are (or I aim for them to be) more user-friendly and because people are already interested in the subject, its likelier they linger for longer in your directory...

Could be wrong...we'll see!

I'll start a niche one, and later a general but with a new concept to get attention (Don't ask me now which new concept because I'll not answer. I don't know yet which new concept will be : )

Good luck to me

Depending on what you want. If you want to target a wide range of audience go for General and if your interested for limited audience then go for niche.
But if your going to do a niche make sure to choose a well known topic or a topic that catches attention easily.

depends if you just want a website... or a website that is about a subject you care about. Just need/want a website - General would be the way to go. If you have a passion about something and know about the market it's in... I'd go niche. It's alot easier to be the number one directory on a subject or small group of subjects then to be number one at everything.

Building a successful general directory is hard enough, let alone limiting yourself to a niche audience.

Again... I think it's easier to make it successful if it is a niche.
