Why do you submit to a paid directory?

I recently blogged about my methods of questioning whether a directory is/isn't worth a submission (paid).

Do you have any thoughts on why you submit to paid directories?

I'd be interested to know other opinions and would also like to elaborate.

The key is submitting to established directories that continue to work on the structure of the directory. A paid directory is a business and so the owners have an interest in maintaining the directory and working at it. Many people start up directories and don't really know the work involved and many times they don't know how to get it off the ground. Then six months to a year down the road the directory doesn't exist anymore or they try to convert it to a paid directory and get discouraged because no one is paying for the submissions. The question is why would someone submit to a paid directory if the owner is not investing in the structure and the quality of the directory?

Submitting to a paid directory is a good idea because in the long run the chances of the site still existing is greater, thus providing a real value for a listing within that directory. If you submit to a free directory and that directory doesn't exist in a year's time what good is that to you? One of my criterion is the amount of time a directory has been in existance. One year is what I look for. The quality of the listings is something else that I look for and how relevant the listings are to the categories. If I see that the owner is not working on the structure of the directory then I have no interest in submitting my sites. The overall quality is the deciding factor for me and it's easy to see if there's any work and thought that's being put in.

Also I think if a directory is paid then the owner might get paid traffic to the site, and therefore incraesing the number of people who will see your site.

I'm not too sure if this is true though, but I'm sure some do!

I Would prefer to submitting directories those are old enough if i want to choose paid listing.(To get backlink from trusted sites.) After last 4/4 PR Update it becomes difficult to buy links just based on PR.

I think it's possible to get quality backlinks without paying a fortune. I've never spent a cent on links/directories, and I have still made out relatively well. I guess it all depends on what you want to spend

I submit some sites to paid directories if I see the owner promoting the site continuously. A committed owner who is trying to make his directory a success usually means a good value for anyone who is listed in that directory. Pricing has to be reasonable though.

Why you should "not" pay for submission.

It is much more cost effective to pay someone $100 to write and distribute a nice press release about your site. If you pay $200 for 4 submissions and that end up being just 4 average backlinks to your site. Google may or may not send you more visitors for that.

But...

If you pay someone only $100 or so to do a press release, you will get many instant visitors and the press release will create temp backlinks which will also raise your PR until the next update.

Enjoy!

You make a good point as far as design is concerned, whether it is a default them or custom, it really depends on the owner to bring value to the listings. Nevertheless, it is good to see someone take the time & money and put it into design. With custom designs usually follows longevity and development.

I am looking forward to the next PR update in hopes of good things for Bay Engine as my directory is still being questioned for paid submissions, even though it has been completely indexed and is showing some traffic for listings.

I usually submit to a directory when my niche category is empty. Why? Simply because someone browsing it has a better chance to look and click at that listing, there's no other. And also it increases link pop among other things.
