How to Promote your site using Directories

Directories are websites that categorize links into specific groups in order to deliver quality sites to their visitors. Although the idea of directories are made for everyone on the internet, we all know only one specific group of people actually look at directories – webmasters!

For us webmasters, directories can be a very useful resource if used correctly. They can drive specific visitors to your site, boost your link popularity and raise your Page Rank. All of these mean more sales, more advertisers wanting to advertise on your page, and more revenue from things like Adsense and YPN.

As a webmaster, you want to submit your website to a broad range of directories. But be sure to only submit to quality ones, because there is a fine line between a directory and a link farm. Here are some things you DON’T want the directory to have:

- “no follow” tags or other ways of NOT passing Page Rank
- All of its links on one page
- Too many ads
- Not custom layout
- Too many links on one page
- Adult and other illegal links

There are three different types of directories that you should be submitting to. We have listed them below, as well as example of directories that we highly recommend.

Free No Reciprocal Link Directories
These directories are the easiest to submit to. They require no payment and no link back. All you have to do is fill out the form and submit your information. These directories are great because they take very little time and cost nothing. They are also the most risky because they can easily turn into link farms. Make sure the site has a high Page Rank and looks like it has restrictions on what types of sites it accepts.

Free Reciprocal Link Directories
These directories are great only if you are prepared to supply a link back. If so, they can be very rewarding because they can accumulate many links and a high Page Rank. They are still free, so you are getting traffic and Page Rank for free. Some people claim that Google hates these types of sites, but I have seen nothing wrong with them so far and highly suggest making a “partners” page on your site and start submitting to these directories. Make sure it is high quality as usual.

Paid Directories
Most new webmasters cringe when they think of paying for marketing and promotion. Well I have some news for you. What good is your site if you have no visitors? Nothing. Paid directories are a great way to build your link popularity on very respectable sites. When buying links on a paid directory, make sure it is popular and has a good Page Rank to pass on to you. Some of these directories have a reciprocal link option for submission. Although these directories do cost money for inclusion, they probably pay off the best in the long run.

I think it would be useful if you added a small description, for example why is Zorkk better that the other free directories or Jayde [I hate it(if the owners are members here I meant that in the good way )]
Maybe create a rating system where you could take into account various factors that would justify your suggestion like
Age
PR
Number of listings
Number of pages indexed in the big search engines
Number of .edu .gov backlinks and DMOZ and Yahoo listings (like seocompany.ca)
Design
Speed of review
Quality of listings
Uniqueness
etc

Yes I understand what you mean but you could add for example that Gimpsy is a great directory because of it's uniqueness, dmoz because of it's authority (good or bad) and the large number of listings, also why are some directories missing like botw.org? Maybe because they are expensive? What I meant was that imho even with just one line of justification the article would be much better.

The mention of reciprocal link directories makes me wince. I NEVER submit to reciprocal link directories, and personally I suspect that they do more harm than good. But that's just me.

I'll redo the recip paragraph to make it clearer that its risky. But I honestly do believe they are a great way for brand new sites to build up link popularity on higher PR pages.
